marfa.
Marfa is a world class art destination, yet I had never been. On my first trip to Marfa it was like coming home and I instantly fell in love with the town of less then 2,000 inhabitants. I seemed to have the same visceral reaction Donald Judd did when he visited for the first time in the 1970's. I was stuck with the austerity and beauty of the landscape set in the Chihuahua desert so close to Mexico. In other words it was love at "First Sight". Walking down El Paso Street next to the iconic St George Hotel I found this amazing building for sale and decided to call. Next thing I knew the realtor showed up in a pick up truck complete with boots and dirty ranch clothes. I thought wow only in a town like this could you have such a "real experience".
After spending a short time viewing the property with Mary Farley I decided to purchase it, which was quite a unusual situation in the middle of a full blown global pandemic. The building itself is quite amazing and was lovingly restored by its previous owners and was formerly in earlier years a bar and brothel as it was near the rail head. Immediately I experienced a "sense of place" and knew It was the right decision. Due to the pandemic I will most likely have the gallery and art space open in early summer so stay tuned for the continuation of this amazing journey.
