Rare Pair of Yoruba Ere Ibeji Figures
Igbuke, Oyo Region Nigeria
Circa 1900
Height 11 1/2"
Provenance: London Trade
A rare pair of female Ere Ibeji twins is unusual that they also incorporate Eshu characteristics. Such ibeji figures devoted to Eshu are rarely seen. The tall coiffure of each resembles a crown beautifully gardooned in an angular manner. The backs of the hairstyles include carved wooden pendant drops of a type usually seen on figures made for Eshu worship, suggesting that this pair served a dual purpose of being both Ibeji's and Eshu figures. Incredible well loved patina.
