Important Codex Vase with Young Scribes - SOLD
Guatemala
700 - 800 AD
Height 5.25” Diameter 4"
Provenance: Florida private collection since 2003
Arte Primitivo, NY December 2, 2003
Sam Dubiner, Tel Aviv, Israel
In very fine condition with no restoration etc. Mineral deposits with root marked areas on buff earthenware with cream slip and red and black-brown paint. Two seated scribes, possibly representing the second set of Hero Twins, Xbalanque and Hunahpu, are shown gesturing and perhaps reading from open codex books in front of them. They each wear large net headdresses with spangles and spotted kilts recalling a jaguar's pelt. Jade jewelry completes their ritual attire. Each figure is separated by a series of repeated glyphs - Initial Signs using either a mirror or Loincloth Apron god as the main sign. These glyphic compounds are to be read as "it came into being," or "ay-a." This vessel is delicately painted in fine-line Codex style with expressive, well-conceived images created by the hand of a master scribe.
