Superb New Caledonia Bird Head Club - SOLD
New Caledonia
Mid 19th Century
Height 30"
The distinctly shaped "porowa ra manu" bird headed clubs of New Caledonia were prestigious objects created for use by chiefs. This type of club symbolized wealth and high rank, and on some occasions served as gifts during ceremonial exchanges. This example is one of the finest that I have seen in decades and has a gorgeous patina with a deep "tigering" of the wood grain on the upper surfaces.
