This outstanding piece, known as a "Huamp" in the Boiken language, hails from the Prince Alexander Mountains, in the East Sepik Province, home to the Boiken people. Carved from a single piece of hardwood, this sizeable and meticulously carved plate boasts a shallow interior bowl and a convex exterior adorned with intricate high relief carvings. Dominating its surface is a stylized totemic Flying Fox, also know as a Fruit Bat. At the heart of the Flying Fox motif lies and upraised circle housing a clan design. Evidencing its age, the bowl displays a deep, rich patina accumulated over time through extensive handling and use. Complementing its beauty is a custom made stand, enhancing its display.
