As an oarsman on John Wesley Powells expedition to the Grand Canyon in 1871, he replaced the official photographer due to ongoing disputes. Later in 1879, he was sent by the Smithsonian to record the indigenous people of New Mexico during the construction of the Southern Pacific Railroad. In this poignant photograph, he records a shrine of the Zuni War God Ahayuda. This powerful image is remarkable for its tonal values.
