Born to missionary parents, he had an illustrious career as a Brigadier General in the Union Army having served in the American Civil War. He became best known as an educator and was the first principal of the Normal School for African American's, Booker T Washington being one of his students. As a founder of the school he expanded the mission in Virginia to include Native Americans. His collection mark is on the bottom of the bowl. A rare and desirable piece of Hawaiian history. Fort Armstrong in Honolulu is named after him.
