Handcarved Calabash or Umeke

Found recently in a Honolulu Thrift Shop as a salad bowl, this is an exceptional example of a late 18th-century umeke. Carved from the nearly extinct kou tree the coloring is superb being cut from the sapwood of the tree. Numerous fine native repairs are present including outstanding examples of kepakepa among others.
